First Light

Introductory Stained Glass Workshop
2½ hours · $85 · All materials included · No experience required

Every stained glass journey begins with a first piece. First Light is a relaxed, hands-on introduction to the copper-foil stained glass process. Designed especially for complete beginners, this workshop lets you experience the most satisfying parts of the craft without committing to a multiweek course.

Most of your glass will be carefully prepared in advance so you have time to explore the process and complete a beautiful suncatcher in one session. You’ll watch a glass-cutting demonstration, try scoring and breaking one or two simple pieces, then grind, copper-foil, solder, and finish your project by hand. You’ll leave with your own finished piece, a better understanding of how stained glass is made, and—very possibly—a brand-new obsession. Every student creates the same featured design, but differences in glass will occur.

Is This a Full Stained Glass Class?
First Light is a project-based introduction, not a comprehensive cutting course.

Because stained glass takes time—and because we want you to leave with a finished piece—most of the glass is cut before you arrive. You’ll still experience every major stage of the copper-foil process and get a genuine feel for the tools, materials, and magic of the craft. Students who want to learn how to cut, fit, and construct an entire stained glass panel independently can continue into Finding Form, our three-week foundational course.

What’s Included
Your registration includes all glass and project materials, including copper foil, solder, flux, and hanging hardware, as well as full use of stained glass tools and equipment. You’ll receive step-by-step instruction throughout the workshop and leave with a finished stained glass suncatcher to take home. Class sizes are limited to just four students, allowing plenty of personal instruction and hands-on help.

*Please wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting a little dusty. Long hair should be tied back when needed. Safety glasses and all other required protective equipment will be provided.
